From CAD to BIM: The Experience of Architectural Education with Building Information Modeling
"In the spring of 2006, Montana State University began to include a Building Information Modeling (BIM) program in its digital graphics and design curriculum. Since then, an increasing number of students have had the experience of designing with BIM programs and comparing their processes and final products with other students who are using traditional Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs. While 2-dimensional CAD and 3-dimensional BIM models may simply be tools to accomplish the same end, they provide two radically different approaches to learning architectural design. This paper discusses the implications of BIM with respect to the student experience." to find out more...

Autodesk Level II Advance training
I attended a two days' training at Innocom and will get my certificates in two weeks' time.
It is very useful and definately a recommended course for anyone who have intensions to learn Revit Architecture.
Anyway, for the issues tackled within the two days for your perusal:-

Note:
Coordination review is to view what is the changes with new copied items
Monitor is to change the copied items through collaboration.
Conceptual Design:-
17.How to create a mass?
massing&Site>in place mass> name mass create mass through drawing
Note:-
Double click lines to enter specific figures.
18.How do you create an In-Place family using mass?
Component>Model-In-Place>define parameters (roof/floors/wall/etc)>sketch the path>sketch the profile>finish sweep/finish model
Note:-
An in place mass is used to create irregular items in Revit. Defination of the item will incorporate properties of the item.
Creating Advanced Components:-
20 How to change Tags?
Select Tag>edit tag family>duplicate and save with different names> add items into tag and change the graphic parameters of the tag
>save and load into project

Note:- to update the tags, select all tags and change the properties through [Element] at top right hand corner
22. How to change door and window family?
Doors and window families comes with instant parameters, walls incorporated in door/window familiy represents all wall type despite its'thickness.
Door jamb, door thickness, sizes and materials are the basic settings to be created.
Modifiy the existing doors into the exact library is the easiest way out.
Visibility settings in Form is important and in plan view, model built is not shown, in model view, lines are hidden.
23. How do you relate a tag with other elements? wall tags/carparking lot tags?
Annotation>Tag by catagory>place the tags accordingly or select all elements to be tagged.
Further changes to be made to the tags through family editing.
All elements can be tagged. All tags can be modified to specific suit.
24. How to add parameters in a revit family?
We dimension the reference line created, add parameters to the dimension. The dimension can be alter under [Family Propeties>Type].
Further on, a formular/equation can be added into the parameters. for example, new dimension = (door height)/4.
25.How to draw group out as a file for later insertion?
select group>save as>library>group (rvg)
26.How to load group?
Insert>Load from Library>Load as group> select .RVG file
27.How to duplicate items to different levels?
Clip board copy can transfer group into different levels and files.
28.How to you update groups?
explode and update one group with different names, select the other groups to be updated through [Element/ Change Element Type].
29.How to create predefine few parameters within one Type of family?
Define family element through reference plane > select new > define new dimensions > save with different naming > select through selection scrolling.
Note: use type for
31. What is nested families?
Families can be nested into another family.
32. How to create a nested family?
Insert another family for example chair into the table family.
Day 2
Design and Analysis:-
Using Design Options:-
1. How to create design Options?
Manage>Design Option>new>name your options> edit selected > start creating your roof profile
To start on next option > goto Manage>Design Option> Scroll to Single Ridge to create another roof profile
2. How to attached walls to different roof options?
After finishing all profiles> select all the walls > Manage > Design options > add to set > attach the walls through design option alteration
3. How to show different views?
Create camera > set the view > duplicate view > rename the views > VG > under design option > select different option and the view will be updated accordingly
Note:-

007-Issues encountered for revit BIM
1. How to deal with problem perspectives?
The easiest way out is an replacing the camera with another one with exact location
2. How to deal with material calculations?
View>Schedules>material Takeoff > Select required Fields > Go through the Formating/Filter/Appearance/Sorting icons.
Check the calculate totals under Formating
Notes: Schedules meant for rooms and area calculation, material takeoff is quantification of materials, both can incorporate formulas turned into costing
3. How to create ramps?
Home>circulation>ramp
Notes: ramps cannot have voids in it. Walls cannot be attached to ramps in revit2010
Tips: Create slope floors then ramps.
4. How to toggle with different unit designs/groups? [ Residential design ]
Just create group with the unit defined > select it > toggle with group selection under Element
5. What is the difference with group?
Group is similar to block in CAD and component in sketchup.
When items in group changed, the rest of the duplicated group follows.
Tips: It is advisable to ungroup items before array commands. Groups result heavier file size and slower work speed.
Therefore, using linked file is lighter for huge replication in a block.
